Our Story
It started as a joke…
Nearly a decade ago, our youngest spotted a food truck and got excited - she thought they sold only grilled cheese. Turns out, she misread the sign, but we started making jokes, anyway.
Her: “That would be a great idea, a food truck that served just grilled cheese and nothing else.”
Us: “Just grilled cheese? You could also sell—”
Her: “No. Just grilled cheese.”
Us: “But what if—”
Her:“No. JUST. GRILLED. CHEESE. $2. White bread. Cheese slice. Nothing else.”
…
Us: “Okay, but hear me out - dijon ketchup.”
Her: “… Yeah, okay. Grilled cheese and dijon ketchup.”
And so the jokes went on. It definitely was not a serious business plan (and let’s be honest, $2 grilled cheese isn’t viable), but the seed had been planted.
So even though the jokes eventually faded from the conversation… the idea stuck in the back of our minds.
Turns out, we weren’t 100% joking
Years later, after falling in love with the area, we moved to Manitoulin Island. In fall 2023, we noticed that the lot and food stand across from Bridal Veil Falls was up for sale.
We looked at each other and remembered that joke.
“What if we actually did dedicate a menu to grilled cheese?”
So we bought the lot. And got to work.
Comfort Food, Elevated
We’ve always loved grilled cheese - I mean, who doesn’t? But when it came to dedicating an entire menu to the childhood classic, we knew we had to make it more than just that $2 grilled cheese we joked about.
And that’s how we got where we are today. At That’s What Cheese Said, we serve gourmet grilled cheese, homemade soups, and fresh, housemade potato chips. We keep the ingredients fresh, the flavors bold, and the vibes fun.
It’s nostalgic, comforting, and a little unexpected. Just like the story that started it all.
